Carl Woideck traces the rise of bossa nova ("new wave") in Brazil in the late 1950s and early '60s, principally at the hands of Antônio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, and Vinicius de Moraes as they brought aspects of prevailing currents in jazz to bear upon traditional samba and influenced jazz and American popular music in turn.
