Each instrument has a distinct sound, of course, but they also have a distinct feel. Some tickle. Some even hurt a bit until fingers or lips get accustomed. But how can a student possibly choose an instrument to play without ever trying one out?

We know that a lot of people stop making music because they got “stuck” with the “wrong” instrument – it was the last one the band teacher needed you to play to round out the ensemble, or it was grandma’s up on the closet shelf, or you got one for Christmas because you thought you liked the sound…

The Music Box is a chance for students to try multiple different instruments. Students get to experience and play a different instrument each week; It might be accordion, ukulele, harmonica, trombone, drums, bagpipes, and even tap dancing or making their own version of an instrument! These students know how to make a sound on a flute, saxophone, or trumpet. They know the differences between violin, viola, cello and bass. (Parents can learn something too!)

It’s a special drop-in class for $10, or you can enroll in the full term for a discount. Each term features a different variety of instruments, and it’s a great class to “buy some time” for your child who is really interested in music but may be on the young side to delve into regular lessons. Kids can also join in even if they are already in lessons – it’s great fun!

If you are rekindling your love of an old instrument, consider why you paused in the first place. Too busy? There is no rule that says lessons need to be a certain length or frequency, and we want to make sure scheduling is accessible to everyone. No the right instrument or music style? We encourage all students to try as many instruments and instructors as they want until they find what is the right fit for them. We also offer inexpensive student instrument rentals so you can try different instruments without the big investment. Lessons too expensive? The Shedd offers need-based financial aid to ensure money is not a barrier to any student. We also offer semi-private lessons so you can split the lesson with a friend or family member, and flexible scheduling that can help music lessons fit into any budget. Lessons are open to students of any age an d experience level.

Whether you want to sing onstage for an audience, or just with a group of friends, The Shedd has something for you! Our vocal department head, Amy Adams, leads two singing groups each term, both of which are specifically tailored for a different kind of singer. Come sign the masterworks with The Shedd Choral Society (Tues 6:30-8:00)! If you are less inclined to sing for an audience, The Shedd Singing Club (Wed 4:30-5:30) might be a great fit for you! Amy uses pieces from the American Music Songbook, along with Musical Theatre standards to teach the singing club members the fundamentals of singing while having a ton of fun along the way!

We are happy to announce our 2026-27 Magical Moombah season starts in late October with Monster Mash! Join the Moombahteers all throughout the school year as join a cooking club that specializes in crazy meals from crazy songs in What's Cookin'!, seriously contemplate the weather in Stormy Weather!, and take off on a trek around the U.S. in On The Road Again!. Each Magical Moombah has a Thursday school performance where school groups and home schoolers can attend, along with two performances on Saturday, with a special Music Box session in between. Audience members are encouraged to dress up and join in all the fun by joining us onstage to tell jokes, participate in contests, sing, and dance!!!
